The wind in Watamu - just perfect for kite surfing

The windy season is split into two, providing trade winds from December to April, known as the Kaskhazi, and Kuzi, which is after the few rainy months starts from May and stays until September. During the day the wind tends to be lighter in the morning and gradually increase until about mid- day and stays strong until the evening.

The Kaskhazi blows from the North/North East (cross-onshore) at around 15-25 knots (mostly around 17 knots), increasing in the afternoon with flat water and a little chop. Most used kite sizes are between 10 - 15 meters.

The Kuzi blows from the South/Southeast (cross-onshore) and with the stronger wind days can bring a heavy chop with swells, The Kuzi is the stronger of the two and blows most days between 17-32 knots but averages around 20 knots. Most used kites sizes are between 6 - 12 meters.

Learn more about the kite spots in Watamu

  • One of our favourites, however slightly tricky. This spot works only during the Kuzi season (June - September) and has a few things such as strong tides, hidden coral stones, and the occasional sea urchin to watch out for. However, during sunset, it creates the feeling of pure freedom. It just needs to be done right and not alone. For details please get in touch, and we'll set you up.

  • Explore beautiful turquoise water with amazing wildlife around. The best time to rock up would be on low tide as the water is nice and flat. But watch out for tourists: it can get a bit busier on the sandbank. Again, consistent cross on-shore winds blow all year round.

  • The most popular of the kitesurfing spots in Watamu is long beach. It stretches 5 km along the coast. The water is mostly flat with few waves and patches of coral reef. This setup works really well especially during low tides. The wind blows consistently cross on-shore in both seasons.

  • Jacaranda is considered as one of the world’s top flat water kite spots. This spot is the best on neap tide and works great in both Kaskazi and Kuzi wind seasons with consistent cross on-shore wind. It's about 20 minutes North of the hotel, so there is no excuse not to go!

  • This spot is a little bit of a trip from Watamu due to being a bit hidden up the coast. Silversands tends to work way better in Kuzi season from June till September when the wind hits this spot just slightly cross off-shore which also delivers some awesome waves.
