Masai MaraNational Reserve
The Masai Mara is considered one of the most important and popular animal sanctuaries and best safari regions in eastern Africa.
Masai Mara National Reserve
The Masai Mara has developed into a sophisticated highlight in recent years, particularly for exceptional individual safari experiences. The 1,672 km2 “Game Reserve” forms the northern part of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The Masai Mara is therefore part of a larger protection zone that stretches from the south of the Serengeti to the northern region of the Masai Mara. In contrast to other protected areas in the country, the Masai Mara does not have the status of a national park, but rather that of a “National Game Reserve” because it is home to the people living here and the local farmers are allowed to have their cattle on their ancestral home lands.
How to get there
The Masai Mara can easily be reached with a four-hour drive by car when starting in Nairobi. Alternatively, you can arrive by plane from almost anywhere in Kenya.
Large areas of the Masai Mara are dominated by open hilly grassland with scattered acacia trees. The geography of the natural landscape offers perfect opportunities for observing the abundant wildlife on a safari. In the Masai Mara you will find the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros, as well as other predators such as cheetahs and jackals. You can find crocodiles and hippos on the Mara River. Giraffes, large herds of zebras and various antelopes can also be found everywhere.
The Mara River and its tributaries cross the enclosed territory of the game reserves. The banks of the Masai Mara are the only places where strips of lush rainforest grow. The annual “Great Migration” of wildebeest migration between July and October highlights any safari in the Mara. Here, you can observe vast herds of wildebeest, zebras and antelopes from the southern Serengeti to the Masai Mara in search of better pastures.
