Tsavo East National Park
Tsavo East National Park is the largest national park in Kenya, world famous for its red elephants.
Tsavo East National Park
Tsavo National Park, located between Nairobi and Mombasa, is the largest national park in Kenya and one of the largest in the world, with an area of 20,000 square kilometres. It is divided into a western and an eastern part. Tsavo East National Park, the more significant part of the park at 11,747 square kilometres, is characterised by a thorn bush savannah and is known for its biodiversity of large animals. In addition to the largest elephant population in Kenya, it is home to lions, leopards, rhinos, zebras, kudu, crocodiles and waterbucks.
How to get there
Tsavo East is easily accessible, especially from the North Coast of Kenya. It’s only 1.5 hours drive from Watamu/Malindi to Sala Gate, the Eastern gate of Tsavo East. There are also daily flights from Nairobi directly to Tsavo East
Tsavo East is particularly known for its red elephants. They cover themselves with the iron-rich earth found here, which gives them a red glow and protects them from insects and sunlight. The lions here are also unique because they don't have a mane. In the dry season, you can observe the wild animals particularly well when they come to the few watering holes. The Lugard Falls, a series of waterfalls, give you a wonderful view of the Galana River - the lifeline of numerous animals. The rock formations washed out by the water look bizarre here. Due to its proximity to Kenya's coast, the park is a popular destination for a combination of safari and beach holidays.
