Tsavo West National Park
Tsavo West National Park is famous for the legend of the Maneaters and it’s lush vegetation and forests.
Tsavo West National Park
If it rains heavily in March, all of Tsavo West (9,000 km²) will fully bloom after the rainy season ends. Then, the lush greenery is overgrown by a vast blanket of white flowers. Acacia trees grow in large parts of the savannah, and gallery forests grow along the Tsavo River. The most accessible animals to spot are ostriches, zebras and giraffes (because of their size). The landscape is all the more varied: hilly, lava-rich and, above all, wetter and surrounded by volcanic cones that are up to 1,800 meters high. The meltwater from Kilimanjaro provides lush vegetation in Tsavo West via rivers and springs. The red road alternates with the black one made of lava rock.
How to get there
Tsavo West is easily accessible, especially from the coast of Kenya. It’s a bit more upcountry than Tsavo East and is an ideal extension of your safari trip.
The main attraction in Tsavo West is the Mzima Springs, a freshwater oasis and spring. Scientists speak of a geological phenomenon. The water of Kilimanjaro and the Chyulu Mountains feeds the spring underground. Over 200 million litres gush into the springs of Mzima every day. Rangers accompany visitors along the hiking trail. The hike through the biotope takes about an hour, and you can observe numerous species of birds, as well as hippos and crocodiles. An underwater station is used to view the many species of fish. A few kilometres from Chyulu Gate is the Shetani Lava Flow, a solidified lava flow around 200 years old. The image is reminiscent of a lunar landscape. The Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary is a 62 km² fenced area dedicated to the protection of black rhinos.
